Mayo V Monaghan
A valuable win for Mayo today. They have one foot in the final, all they need is a draw against Cork and they're into it. Dublin have a tough game away to Tyrone.
Mayo had the majority of possession in the first half, yet they trailed Monaghan 0-09 to 0-03. A fantastic goal and a point within a minute close to half time gave Mayo the boost they needed, and they went in at the break 2 points down. They started the second half badly again, down by 6 points after 10 minutes. Keith Higgins got what looked like an awful bad injury, but he was able to walk on it and was replaced by Barrett. It looks like his ankle went under him, I couldn't see it clearly because I was in the stand and it happened the far side of the pitch. Monaghan missed very few of their chances, whereas Mayo missed a lot. T Mortimer with a close-range shot trailed wide in the first half.
Mayo had the wind in the second half, and they got a second goal, with A Moran-who hadn't the best game-chipping over a point as well. C Mortimer kicked over a free also, and Mayo finished off the game with a 3 point win.
Varley-what a talent. He commands his position so well and he was one of the main instigators in Mayo's win. O'Malley played exceptionally well, and Clarke pulled off a few great saves. Kilcoyne should be back for Mayo's next game away at Cork on the 17th. I don't think Higgins' injury was too bad-he was walking on the foot, Dillon is another concern, being replaced by Ronaldson after picking up an injury.

Mullins, why the sarcasm? if it had been a report on a Dublin victory that started this thread then you wouldnt be so sarcastic. If Dublin win the league then ul be saying that they are the team to replace Kerry at the top of the tree so why not just read the report and agreor disagree with what it says rather than making snide sarcastic comments?

Really pissed off about the result of this game, I could go on a long rant but I won't. Bottom line is we threw it away, giving away 6 point leads twice is unforgivable, we should have been out of sight at half time given how Mayo played up to then, but we didn't take full advantage. Some of the tactics were baffling in the second half, particularly Freeman playing round the half back line. Same aul story, we're looking good then concede sloppy goals. After the second we were absolute dirt, couldn't get back into it and made numerous silly mistakes. And even with the impressive first half display, we only got two points from play from our two danger forwards, Freeman and McManus. We didn't get them involved enough during the whole game, McManus in particular had the beating of his man but we didn't exploit that.
Fair play to Mayo, they wanted the game more when push came to shove and fully deserved the win. People may say we deserved something out of it but given the way we finished the game out I find it very hard to agree with that.

Re: Mayo V Monaghan
it was a funny game alright MMM a bit like the Dublin Galway game except Dublin never made a comeback to win.
Monaghan were cruising and the goal before half time was a real kick in the teeth for them. But as you say McManus and Freeman were not getting enough ball in the right areas of the field were they would have done damage.
Its been a funny league campaign in general for all concerned - we have learnt very little new about any of the teams, makes for an interesting championship..............

Aye it's been a weird aul league alright. Alot still on the line going into the last day, it'll be a nervy day!
You just don't know what to make of certain teams' form going into the championship now, should be interesting surely.
