Fitzgibbon Cup
Todays QF rusults
NUIG 1-24 St. Pats 1-12
UL 2-20 UCC 1-13
WIT 0-15 DIT 0-13
Results generally going according to script there, think the LIT/UCD game was called off. Semis and Final to be played here in Galway on the 5th and 6th of March. An LIT/NUIG Final would be nice.

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
The semis are in Dangan and the final is in Salthill on Saturday right?
I may pay a visit over the weekend to them.
Only to heckle NUIG of course, for not choosing one of Westmeath's/ Ireland's brightest prospects in the sport for their freshers a few years back!
Ah no, NUIG v LIT would be a very interesting indeed.

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
Yeah the Semi's on out in Dangan and the Final on in Pearse. LIT/NUIG would be brilliant, not sure how the SF draw works though Seb, if its open or not. Im assuming you yourself were the neglected Fresher all them years ago. No doubt you went on to prove them all wrong in your subsuquent ground-breaking inter county career with the Westmeath hurlers

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
I don't think NUIG will be good enough to make the final. If they are to do so they will have to avoid WIT and LIT.

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
In my day there were only the 4 main unis, us, UCD, UCG, UCC and Trinity, and then Maynooth were allowed in, and won two of the 4 I played in.
Star players were Iggy Clarke and Sean Silke with beard from Galway, and Sean Stack of Clare. They won two in a row and I don't know if they ever won it again.
all these new fangled teams have me lost. I did play against St Pat's Drumcondra once whose star was Brian Cody, and only recently I discovered the idiot alongside him was Ge r loughnane.
But they were not allowed into the Fitzgibbon by the academic snobs, such as my good self.

What happened in the other 2 Pat? Were you injured? I'm sure if you had been playing it would have been four out of four!

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
When I said US I meant us, not U.S as in University of Spancillhill.
Us is/was and always will be the QUEEN@S University of Belfast, winners of the Fitzgibbon in 1953, the finest achievement in the history of the GAA, if you think about it.
So Cork beat us 12 -15 to 3-6 in one of my years, and then beat us 2-6 to 1-8 in my final year, with a last gasp goal.
UCD beat us 3-12 to 2-12 when I was "resting" and I can't even remember who destroyed us the other year.
QUB won it in 1953 with mostly an Antrim side. Antrim lost the 1954 All Ireland semi to Wexford by 12-17 to 2-3.
I still wonder what happened in 1953. Rivals Ireland bowling out the West Indies for 25 in Sion Mills for the greatest ever achievement in Irish sport.
Without going over the top.

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
Its common knowledge that Joe Canning and Sea the Stars are the two greatest achievements ever. In anything.
Semi-finals
Friday 5th March 2010 Dangan
LIT v NUIG
UL v Waterford IT

????????????????????????
They are question marks. Do ye learn nothingat those hedge schools down south?
I asked you a question, and you say I am agreeing with myself.
Are you doing the old "cute hoor" bit pretending to be daft?
I'm too old to fall for that.

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
NUIG will win it, with four Clonlara lads on the starting 15 they can't be beaten....Although if Cormac O'Donovan and Paul Nihill can't shake off their injuries they are goosed, as John Lee and his two or three other galway lads up there are windy as the day is long

Re: Fitzgibbon Cup
I expect LIT to win this comfortably tomorrow as the odds suggest. I've played a good bit of Fitzgibbon myself and I can tell you this NUIG team aren't a patch on LIT. Lee is going to mark Canning tomorrow.
