Worst town in Ireland
Having spent a surreal evening there on a cold wet February night a few years ago - I nominate Foynes. It was like being in Deliverance. Accommodation was like the Bates Motel, everyone was pi55ed by 9.00pm (and driving!) and then some older folk came into the bar later with their kids and sat wiothout saying a word to each other or anyone. Communal sink and toilets upstairs and wardrobes from WW1 ...... with carpet that moved and hummed.
Foynes - once was even too much....

Worst town in Ireland. What is the criteria for this?
Crime rate? Facilities (or lack thereof)? Overall appearance?
The Roscommon part of Athlone is quite dodgy.
Longford wouldn't be great but it has improved a bit.

Clones. No other contenders even come close.
By the way, Ballymena is RIGHTLY famed as possibly the best "shopping" town in Ireland.

Mohill, Co.Leitrim is the outstanding selection in this category. It's retail center hasn't changed or received a lick of paint in my memory. The 4 publicans in Glebe St. couldn't agree in whose pub the Christmas lights would be plugged into last year, leaving the entire kip bereft of any lights. (I did it last year, there's a grandchild in mine and she won't sleep etc.)
The inherent problem is that these fookers are established there lifetimes and have the moola made.
The town also possesses a right few ne'er do wells who are before the courts on a monthly basis. One lad when up last month on his 85th disorder charge (his mother pleaded with the Judge to sent him away to hell) had a curfew imposed on him, banning him from the town between 6pm and 6am.
That night he was in the middle of the Main St. with a traffic cone on his head roaring at the Guards at 2 in the morning.

You would want to see it Boc....Time warp or what!!! Business premises abandoned, boarded up, awaiting Armageddon....
That said, Mountrath, Co. Laois is no Las Vegas.

I went to mass in Mohill once and had a cure (post Wedding on the Saturday!) afterwards in the Green something - Goose maybe? Back in 1984 I reckon my first drinking expedition with the late Da and the cure was badly needed I can tell ya!

The Green Rooster, then under the captaincy of Jim Cusack. Still in the family and a noble enough spot for pints.
