Most Natural Footballer of Last Ten Years?
Re: Most Natural Gaelic Footballers?
Boxtyeater wrote:mossbags wrote:No true denizen of Connacht football would ever class C McDonald as a natural/great or whatever. A nice guy to be sure but a spoofer of a footballer, if ever there was one. Just to think, Mayo might have actually won an All-Ireland or two if they hadn't him on their back's for so many years.
On the button Moss. A spot on shout lad.
100% correct, totally overrated.

On Ciaran Mc ......
The genius differs from us men in being able to endure isolation, his rank as a genius is proportionate to his strength for enduring isolation, whereas we men are constantly in need of "the others," the herd; we die, or despair, if we are not reassured by being in the herd, of the same opinion as the herd.,
Kierkegaard
Genius . . . is the capacity to see ten things where the ordinary man sees one. Ezra Pound

Now I saw the Galway 3 in a row team, and the 1998-2002 teams, but haven't seen ANY Galway player who could excite me like McDonald. Joyce was a greatvtalent, but McDonald had it all.
Hurling now is different. Tony Keady, Joe Cooney, sheer unadulterated class.

All Ireland medals is it?
That makes Ogie Moran 8 times the player Sean Purcell was.
Do you agree?

So we can measure McDonald by all Ireland medals won but not Purcell.

Re: Most Natural Gaelic Footballers?
I'm a Ciaran McDonald fan also. He dragged an average side to 2 all-irelands, and was unlucky to be injured in one, and pulled/dragged/fouled out of the other by Eamon Fitzmaurice (still played fairly well that day though - 2004).
Strong, brave, skillful, his problem was he had nothing to work with in the forward line, and a team all too willing to shirk their own responsibilities and leave it all up to him.
I also think his performance in the All-Ireland club final for Crossmolina was as good as I have seen from anyone.
McDonald wasn't perfect, but he was an excellent footballer was one of my favourite players to watch for the last decade.

Samin i dont think it will be hard to call at all St Galls will win pulling up. Biggest problem with Ogs is they have been on such a high since winning Armagh that its hard to get the head right for the next match - They are probably more than happy with their lot and dont really carry any realistic hopes of winning Ulster. St Galls have many seasoned campaigners and there eyes are firmly fixed on an All Ireland title never mind an Ulster title so they should brush the Ogs aside handily enough. I think Galls biggest threat in Ulster are Dromore or Loup the rest are just making up the numbers harsh that may sound but can you really see Eunans Clontibret Kilcoo Derrygonnellly etc causing much of a ripple - i cant.
St Galls by at least 6 points.
Hope you didn't put any money on our game Boc! Also by all accounts Pearse Ogs could have and perhaps should have beaten St. Galls.

Portlaoise are racking up some big scores and looking impressive. Did someone on here say they had them backed?

Yeah they're looking good alright, joint favourites for the All Ireland now. They're losing Zac Tuohy now to Austrailia but still very strong all the same.

To be honest Boc I was always fully confident of winning against Dromore, we've a good experienced team now and we felt we would be well fit for a crack at Ulster. Dromore are a very good side also but I'm not sure why they were such favourites in many places after only being in Ulster once before. No doubt they'll be back next year though and every year they'll gain more experience.
The injury to McManus was true, as was the knee injury JP Mone had. A week would have made enough difference for JP for him to play a good 30 mins or so when he did very well, but his legs couldn't hold out much longer than that, hopefully he'll be fitter for this Sunday. As for McManus, he did break his wrist a little over two weeks ago, but what happened was that he had the cast took off yesterday morning and the wrist was very heavily strapped. It was clear he wasn't up to his best yesterday but I thought he did very well considering the circumstances. Fair play to the lad for having the balls to do this, especially as everyone knows about his injury and he knew he'd have it dragged all day.
Thought we defended well for the most part, although there were a few silly frees given away which let Dromore back into it late on. Marty Corey was immense, clearing up anything that came his way, I'd imagine he'd pick up CJ on Sunday. Dessie also solid, McCullagh did nothing from open play. McMenamin also very quiet, apart from when he actually opened his mouth! Thought McCusker was their best man up front, scored a few nice points including a couple gems from play. But all in all I thought the defence were impressive yesterday, only conceded 3 pts from play I think. We'll certainly need to keep that form up if we're to have a chance against St. Galls and their excellent forward line.

Re: Most Natural Gaelic Footballers?
Tyrone clubs have a poor record in Ulster in all fairness so i suppose i shouldn't be that surprised, that said and with all due respect I wouldn't have looked on Clontibret as a force to be reckoned with either.
I fancy Loup to win it now

Re: Most Natural Gaelic Footballers?
Not saying we're a great force but in fairness we've a right bit more experience in Ulster for a start, and that counts in this competition. St. Galls would have been the one team I'd have liked to avoid and sure enough not we meet them. If Galls win I really couldn't see Loup winning that final to be honest.

Not too sure if he's still there himself, haven't been there in a good while. Wouldn't be surprised if it closed down before long. The rural pubs in the area are dying a quick death, the Braeside across the road was sold and wasn't doing too well anyway. As I say, even some of the younger lads prefer to go across the border to the Derryvale!
