Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
Lethal! Heard this on the grapevine last night but dismissed it as bull, seems very likely now! Great man to have on board, I know that from first hand after this year and the work he's done with Armagh and Kildare speaks for itself. Seems like he doesn't want to take on the Armagh job just yet, or maybe he's still pissed off with the county board over how he was treated when he went for the job before.
Tis a bit strange why he would leave the assistant manager position in Kildare, and take over the same job in Monaghan, especially when Kildare are in a better place after this year and well set up to challenge for Leinster next year. Perhaps he wants a new challenge, but moreso I'd say the travelling was taking it's toll, we're alot closer to home. Of course, maybe he just liked what he's seen with us this year! Maybe he's been offered the option of taking over the following year(McGeeney the man Armagh want in the long-term), as 2010 is certainly Banty's swansong. But an Armagh man over Monaghan, surely not...

Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
bit surprised by this whole turn of events - Grimley said he left Kildare becasue of the travelling but it did seem a bit coincidental that the Armagh job was up for grabs at the same time. Then i wondered why Banty was staying on with Monaghan, i honestly thought he had given that job everything he could and that he had taken the wrong decision.
But he's obviously a clever b*****d and had one final trick up his sleeve with the recruitment of Grimley. Monaghan have the potential to be Ulster champions next year with the trio of Banty Grimley and McElkennon running the show.
Fair play to Banty - but one must wonder jsut how deep the hurt runs between Grimley and the Armagh Co Board, where now for Armagh is there nayone else in the county capable to taking them to the top table of football again or had Grimley just shot their chances to pieces by sticking the two fingers up at them...................

Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
Yeah thought that way myself, didn't think Banty staying on was a wise move and was a bit surprised at him seemingly staying too long. But now the reason for him delaying his decision is crystal clear, he was looking to get a top coach like Grimley in to help, and he's a big addition. Was a bit surprised also when I heard McElkennon was staying on but it has the look of an excellent backroom team now, here's hoping anyway. Marty Mc will focus on being the trainer, as that's what he does best, Banty had noone else to bounce ideas off last year and Grimley will be an excellent assistant. Hopefully it can give the team a timely boost after a couple of disappointing championships, and who knows, he may even bring a bit of luck for a change!

Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
I beginning to think if I want him as Armagh manager. He seems to walk out on all the clubs and counties he has been assitant at. One mishap with the Armagh CB and he will be gone.
On the otherhand...
McGeeney has one more year left on his Kildare contract, IF Grimley did find it too much to travel then maybe he is biding his time for a year.
Also, Oisin McConville and McGrane spoke to him a few days ago for a couple of hours, he has a few conditions that had to be met if he was to become Armagh manager but the CB was only willing to meet one of them.

Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
Grimley has all but ruled himself out of ever taking the Armagh job going by todays news. He says there is too much baggage from the last time he applied fo rthr job and that its obvious his face doesnt fit with the Armagh job.
Seems there is some major unrest in the Orchard County - i'd say theres a few rotten apples need weeded out of the county board setup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
Its a baffling turn of events. Grimely for me stood out for the Galway job at first as I hadn't even thought of Kernan as believed he was would never consider managing a county other than Armagh(had not realised his mother was a proud Ballinasloe woman). McGeenys sitting pretty in Kildare and the Armagh hot seat is surely Grimelys and he only goes and takes a post with Monaghan. So you have three Armagh heavyweights Grimely,McGeeny and Kernan playing big roles in Monaghan, Kildare and Galway while their native county is still looking for a manager. Crazy stuff really. Whoever does get the Armagh gig must surely be aware that they'll only be keeping the seat warm for Geezer in 2011.

Agreed. It makes sense with Grimley joining Banty as he is giving it one more year and Geezers contract is up next year.

So you think Grimley will join up with McGeeney at Armagh next year?
I cant see the Armagh CB lasting another year. It sounds like the clubs are getting a little pissed off with the current board.
McGeeney will come back to Armagh next year!

Do you mean Grimley will join up with McGeeney at Armagh in 2011, or that he'll take over Kildare by himself? Neither's likely.

He'd want to sort out his 'differences' with the Kernan clan first GF

unless things change within the county board i suspect there will be no Geezer to join - he wont touch Armagh whilst the legacy of JK looms large int he background.
Perhaps we could see Armagh players going on strike to oust the trouble-makers!!!!!

Nah, he'll be managing us!
Can't see him going back to Armagh after all the fallout from this, and it seems like most Armagh people wouldn't want him and are pissed off at his decision. Don't see why he would seemingly cut so many ties just to go off for a year and be a selector at one of Armagh's oldest rivals. He seems to have enjoyed his time working in Monaghan thusfar as he must have liked what he seen to take up this position. Grimley will have been told he'll be in pole position to take over from Banty next year, up to him if he wants to take it, of course his feelings on working with Armagh may have changed by then.

It's a funny old game all right. Is Grimley a bit full of himself? Won't interview for a role etc? No one is irreplaceable after all.

dont know too much about him to be honest except that when he played he was no saint - never thought he would turn out to be a highly respectecd coach.
seems he has used the situation to rub the county boards noses in it - they have issued a statement to say everything wa smoving along as per the timescales they had set out and that with applications only closing last week it was too soon to make a decision yet. Grimley seemed to be saying he wanted to be offered the job without an interview.
Without doubt there is more to the whole story than we are hearing - was he even nominated at all - how are the clubs going to view his V sign and has be burnt his bridges in terms of ever getting the job in future. I have to say if Grimley is reluctant to take the job i cant see Geezer being too keen on it either, even in a years time.
Its a scenario Armagh football could well have done without it has the potential to set them back several years and to the Armagh fans the next Ulster title must seem light years away never mind the next All-Ireland.
Just glad its not happening in Tyrone..........................

Yeah, I'd hate to be from a county where they made a complete mess out of getting a manager in

Re: Grimley going to Monaghan
We still have great managers within the county. We may even try and get Sean Boylan in!
Feckin 3 potential managers in 3 other counties. One day we will have all three of them together and dominate Gaelic football - Yeah I WISH!
