Guilty secret here - Omar senior served a sabbatical in the marble city early eighties so Omars' blood does not run pure Gold and Green - Omar schooled in the village (and a few month in St Kierans) including a year under the current principal who is better known nationally for his extra curricular work rather that his blackboard achievements. Omar proudly wore the Green and Red of the village U-12 and
indeed the B&W of St Kierans U-14 but there wasn't many footballs to be seen.

So this thread brings about a little bit of nostalgia in no small quantity aided by the fact that MR and Mrs Omar spent last weekend in the marble city including supping a few pints in the Village INN.
In the village Fan and Chunky were legends and some of the kinship where the same go as Omar
lined out with Philly and Chunky Junior on manys an occasion.

As regards Boxtys team Tommy,Hickey,Fan,DJ,Shefflin,Kehir are no contest
The inclusion of Frank Cummins and Dick O hara show that Boxty has a codgers liking for the "though shalt not pass" players but they are indeed Kilkenny Greats.

The Noteable Ommissions (1980 onwards)

Skehan (picked up a few handy ones but still remember his treble save against ray cummins and JBM in 1982)
Michael Kavanagh
Jackie Tyrrell
Brian Cody
John Power
Pat O neill
Any Fennelly ? surely a token gesture for the Dynasty Liam ?
Joe Hennesssy (shocking exclusion)
Cha
billy Fitz (though no he was really only a freetaker)
_____________
Changes (Ive played in right line but wrong wing)

Kavangh for O hara
Joe Hennessy for JJ
Cha for Frank Cummins
John Power for Pat Delaney

Can't really touch that full forward line - harsh for Liam Fennelly

Fair comments, some marginal calls.
Frank Cummins was without doubt the finest hurling midfielder of my time. His only competitor was Michael Roche of Tipp who was a more classical type of hurler.
John Power is unlucky, but given that Boxty and the aforementioned Chunky were bosom/boozin buddies back in the day (aside from his wonderful talent) he gets the nod.
Joe Hennessy is also unlucky but there aren't too many Tommy Walshes.
Pat Delaney is a fixture...fact. The 71 final saw him destroy the aforementioned Roche...Nailed on.
Dick O'Hara was the front runner in what Kilkenny defenders are all about....tough, unyielding, uncompromising and skillful. Jackie Tyrrell is the modern day exemplification....

Next.
