Big relief in Mayo tonight. James Horan has been appointed the new Mayo manager. Thank fook this long running saga is nearly over and that Tommy Lyons didnt get it. More here from the Mayo news.

James Horan is new Mayo senior football manager

Weeks of speculation were brought to an end tonight when James Horan (38) was appointed as the new manager of the Mayo senior football team.
The Ballintubber manager, who was born in New Zealand, was recommended for the position by the five-man Mayo GAA selection committee and ratified by club delegates at a County Board meeting at McHale Park, Castlebar.
Former Dublin manager, Tommy Lyons, and Anthony McGarry were the other candidates interviewed for the high-profile position which was vacated by John O’Mahony last June.

I'd agree with that. I'm delighted that Mayo have decided to appoint from within, and hope that Meath do likewise. There is no reason that any county should have to look outside for a manager.

External managers, whether at club or county level, are a major problem for the GAA, and are fueling the argument for professionalism.

Well done Mayo - credit where it's due.

Shame to see Mayo appoint a New Zealander to the role rather than someone from within the county. This only fuels the business of professional managers. For shame.

Good luck to him.

Most unusual to have a New Zealander brought in alright. I think we will see Mayo adopt a more Southern Hemisphere style next year ie Ulster type football .....

It is nice to see the name Horan as manager. After all it was another Mayoman called Horan who showed the courage to bring the Airport to Knock. So lets hope that hus namesake, James follows in his footsteps and lands a trophy. Razz
