The Chief of Staff.....
It was confirmed today that Lt.Gen. Dermot Earley, the army Chief of Staff , is battling a debilitating illness and has been off duty for the past 3 months.
While having no great affection for Roscommon it would be remiss of me not to express my earnest wishes that he achieves a speedy recovery and returns to full health at the earliest opportunity.
One of the finest midfielders of his generation, I recall him playing Connacht championship at both minor and senior on the same day. A fine footballer and gentleman to his fingertips, Earley along with Tony McManus, Mayor Lindsay, Harry Keegan, Jigger O'Connor and others were the mainstays of Roscommon football in their last "golden age" of the 1970's.
I hope he gets well soon and my thoughts are with himself, Mary and their family...

With my Roscommon blood he was always a hero in my house. Over the last few years I have met him on numerous occasions. A more down to earth, unassuming man you could not meet - a real gent. I heard about this a while back and sincerely hope - with the help of God - that he recovers.
