None taken Boc. What is it you don't like about it?
In all fairness i havent watched that much of it so i am probably guilty of talking sh!t - its all the breaks and the fact that it is so commercialised and there is an Ad break every other minute - i'm not patient enough to watch it I suppose TC.
Is it that skilful a sport is there much in terms of tactics bar cleaning your direct opponent out???
Patrique coming from Antrim I'd believe that comment you made................
It's possibly the most tactical game there is!
Each play normally goes down something like this:
The offensive co-ordinator will communicate a formation and set-play (run or pass, what direction blockers to go, what routes receivers to run, etc) to the quarterback, who in turn communicates this to the rest of the offence in the huddle.
At the same time, the defensive co-ordinator for the other team communicates a formation and set-defensive play to the defensive captain, who passes the instruction on to the rest of the defence.
Once the two teams line up, the quarterback will attempt to "read" the defensive allignment, and based on this may or may not adjust the formation, the blocking or even whether to run or pass by calling instructions to his teammates (called an "audible"). The defensive captain will also be trying to do similar on his side.
Once the ball is snapped, the quarterback will see how the defense is moving, and may or may not again alter the planned play to react to this.
So basically, it's all about tactics!

Re: Superbowl Tonight
I'd agree with that B&W. It's a bit like chess, but instead of the little horses and rooks it is played with 18 stone men with olympic-standard pace. And there is serious skill in throwing a ball 50 yds with pin-point accuracy, especially when you have 11 giants trying to kill you.
Yes, it has lots of stoppages and the whole thing lasts 3 hours, but you get 60 full minutes of playing time, which is much more than you get in rugby, soccer, gaelic football or hurling.
I think it is a great game, once you understand the rules and what is actually going on.

Re: Superbowl Tonight
Some simple rules. At the start of the game they toss the coin to decide who receives the ball for the first half, away team chooses. The team not receiving the ball kicks it down to the other team, if it lands in the endzone the receiving team can take a knee so the attacking team starts at the 20 or they can decide to run it in the hope of getting further down the field.
The attacking team gets 4 attempts to try and get 10 yards. If the player is tackled in field the clock keeps running down, the attacking team also has roughly 30-35 seconds in between each attempt. Usually on 4th down the attacking team will punt the ball otherwise the defending team would take over from where the attacking team are if they failed in their 4th attempt. It is 6 points for a touchdown and 1 for the field goal or "extra point" attempt after scoring a touchdown. You can try for 2 points by passing or running it into the endzone but this can be difficult.
There are some other rules such as offside, holding, and other rules about whats a good catch and whats a fumble etc.

God Sami, I thought they were absolutely brutal. A fine band in their day, but the years haven't been kind to them.
not their best but still great compared to some of what's on offer these days
I thought the who weren't too bad considering their age, the best half-time show of recent years I thought was Tom Petty 2 years ago sounded really good.

i would have thought an intelligent man (though it has yet to be proved) like yourself, would realise that the quote at the end of my posts would refer to those to try to discuss things they know nothing about - at no point did i try to give the impression i knew what I was talking about - so slide on my friend, have you not got elections to worry about ???????????????????

Re: Superbowl Tonight
The whole stop start thing is the biggest problem i would have with this game. People say it like chess, well i wouldnt watch it either.
To be fair, each to their own. I dont know the rules and like Bocerty i have no interest in getting to know them as i think all the stopping and starting, ad breaks etc would put my head away.

In fairness I did try and watch a few superbowl finals years ago but just didn't bother again as I found only slightly less boring than rugby and cricket. The sports maybe ok to some but nil siad mo cupan tae . Everyone to whatever turns them on or off.

You might want to re-read that B.E., and work out what I was referring to when I referred to pace (i.e. the athletes themselves).
As an aside, there are many sports, some in the olympics and some not, that last 3+ hours - tennis, formula 1, golf, baseball, cricket, various distance winter sports....
And the chess comment was more to show how tactical the game is, as opposed to compare the excitement levels.
Samin's point is a fair one, about the stop-start nature not appealing. It can get frustrating, but given the physicality of the game, you just couldn't play it 60 minutes non-stop.
