Football team of the decade Empty Football team of the decade

Post  bocerty Thu Sep 24, 2009 6:13 pm

Following on from Clash's post about the hurling team of the decade it's only fair we have one for the football team of the decade.

I haven't mine finalised just yet but i would be interested to see what everyone else's team would look like. Also if you could indicate who your player of the decade would be just to see how many different players we get nominated.

I hope to have my team finalised in the next day or so.

Ok guys i fast tracked my selection - its not an easy job when you look back at some of the players that have played over the last decade. No doubt you will all have your own opinion which is the whole point of the exercise.

Anyway for what its worth here is my team of the decade

1 Stephen Cluxton
2 Francie Bellew
3 Seamus Moynihan
4 Marc O’Se
5 Tomas O’Se
6 Kieran Mc Geeney
7 Phillip Jordan
8 Dara O’ Se
9 Sean Cavanagh
10 Brian Dooher
11 Declan O’ Sullivan
12 Michael Donnellan
13 Colm Cooper
14 Peter Canavan
15 Oisin Mc Conville

Honourable mentions go tot he following who would grace any team.

Stephen O’ Neill
Graham Geraghty
Padraig Joyce
Dara O’ Cinneide
Paul Mc Grane
Ciaran Whelan
Alan Brogan
John Mc Entee
Tony Mc Entee
Conor Gormley

It would also be remiss of me not to mention Cormac Mc Anallen (RIP), who, was he still with us would no doubt have made it onto the team.

Footballer of the decade would probably be Tomas O' Se (with Dooher not far behind)

er excuse me Mr Cluxton whilst Francie often wore the number 3 jersey for Armagh he quite often found himself out in the corner marking a danger man - so number 2 shouldnt be a problem.

Would you like to bring this up with the GT CCCC ?

AllStars mean **** all to me.

And surely if Fay was a 90s player, then Canavan was too!

Goalkeeper would be Sean McGreevy, no challengers.

Still thinking of the rest.

Handy comment when your'e not getting any Football team of the decade Icon_lol Anyhow here's my 15:

Cluxton.
O'Se, Moynihan, Keane (WH)
O'Se, McGeeney, dePaor.
Earley, O'Se.
Dooher, Joyce, Donnellan.
Cooper, Cavanagh, Canavan.

The spread of last 8/4 is reflected in this selection I feel.

ok here goes, i may come across as being biased. Genuinely not, just have seen alot more of Armagh, Tyrone and Kerry players than any other counties this decade. Everyone may not agree but i dont think any of these players could be written off by anyone either.

1. Cluxton
2. M. OSe
3. Bellew
4. McMenamin
5. Tomas OSe
6. Geezer.
7. Jordan
8. Darragh OSe
9. McGrane
10. Donnellan
11. Cavanagh
12. Geraghty
13. Gooch
14. Clarke
15. McDonnell

Subs.

GK McGreavey
Def. Andy Mallon
Moynihan
Lockhart
kelly (Laois)
Enda McNulty
Fay

mid. Whelan
McAnallan

for. McConville
Canavan
steven ONeill
Donaghey
Bradley
joyce
Brian McGuigan

Just for the record my player of the decade would be Tomas OSe. Think he is as steady as a rock and chips in with a good few scores as well.

Nothing much between our calls Samin and without a doubt Tomas O'Se would indeed be the man of the noughties.
Geraghty would be a very marginal call though, quality player, talismatic to Meath folk and it's indeed a pity that he didn't have anyone of his standard or vision around him in this decade.
His incredible ability is masked somewhat by him having to do it all by himself ie. the Lonely Royal.*

Mid field must be Darragh and...........McGrane.

And a full forward line of Gooch, Donaghy and Canavan. With Donaghy's ball winning ability and vision the other two would be sensational.

i personally think clarke is as good a ball winner as donaghey but is the more complete full forward much better score taker. The problem for clarke at the minute is the standard of forwards playing beside him

I am doing a Mickey Harte here, picking a team rather than individuals. I don't need my full forward to be a score taker if he is feeding those two.

Personally i dont see what the fuss is with Donaghy - very over rated in my opinion - only one game he played stands out for me and that was the one a few years ago against Armagh (sorry Samin). I notice not too many picked him either.
