Refs & Substitutions
Jim - can you throw a bit of light on the position re substitutions and adding on time? Even on the Sunday Game last night they mentioned time should've been added on by ref. I know of no such rule in GAA - only in soccer. GAA substitutions are a completely different ball game - pardon the pun - in that the game isn't stopped for them. Can you clarify what the official position is?
ps Ref did not add on enough time yesterday!

Re: Refs & Substitutions
This is all I could find:
(iv) A substitution may only be made during a break in play
after the substitution note has been given to the Referee or
in the case of Senior Inter County game, to the Sideline
Official.
(v) A break in play is when the ball has gone out of play
following a score or a wide or a stoppage in play called by
the Referee for medical attention to an injured player.
3.2 The playing time shall consist of two periods
of thirty minutes each, but time shall be added
on in each period for incidental or deliberate
delays.
Rules seem vague and would a sub be seen as a deliberate delay.

I reckon incidental Clash. I also note that it says 30 minutes each - rules for League maybe? But it appears to me there is no such rule as 30 seconds per sub - yet again people are getting GAA mixed up with soccer - including the Sunday Game panel!

From the Indo ...
Curley also clarified that referees are not in a position to add injury-time for substitutes made during the game.
"A referee can only add on time for what is seen as 'undue delay'. They cannot add time for a team making changes."

Re: Refs & Substitutions
A well respected poster I know from County Tyrone on another forum is a referee. He did the course in the last year, he says he was told 30 seconds per substitute. I would be inclined to believe him rather than any of ye lot.

So Oisin if there was ten subs, you would add on maybe 2-3 minutes, would that be fair?

Interesting to note:
1.2 DUTIES OF THE REFEREE
(xi) To present the ball to the Captain of the
winning team at the end of a Provincial or All-
Ireland Final.
Never knew this, but does it ever happen.

Loyal he must of done the FAI course rather than the GAA one.Loyal2TheRoyal wrote:A well respected poster I know from County Tyrone on another forum is a referee. A subsistution is made during a break in play it is not deemed a stoppage and you are under no obligation to add time on for it.
Your esteemed poster from the north in Meath I believe you are talking about loyal is as the say blowing some rather hot air through his a**e.
Typically most refs would use a bit of common sensea nd add time on.
Unfortunately this is what is lacking for most boys in black (myself included with certain clubs as well) is some common sense.
But that one aspect that make these games brill you can see someone blown up for a thing in croker and you get away with it at home and you have a right laugh in the pub afterwards.
a break in play generally indictes a free, line ball, kick out throw ball, injury, half time no where does it state or imply that you should add time on.
As I stated on a previous thread when posting those few questions most people mix up the queens game rules (thats your 30 sec crap) and our rules most players don't even know how far they have to be from a line ball 13metres how far from a free 13 in football 20 in hurling how many times a ball can be brought forward and also how mant subs can be brought on in a game and then in extra time etc etc etc

My point exactly Jim - and even the Sunday Game panel were wondering about 30 seconds!! Hilarious if it wasn't so ridiculous .....
