Do all Nordie accents sound the same
Nordie Accents
Why does everyone up north have the funny same accent??
Was talking to a friend from Donegal last night and insists this isn't true but I reckon it clearly is.
Was just wondering what ye all think.

Re: Nordie Accents
if there was a maybe option, then i'd probably had clicked it. alot of nordie accents sound the same but not all. i do think theres a slight difference between say a donegal accent and a antrim one. all in all as a very small island , we have some varietys of accent, the most annoying of which is a cork accent. its a like a dentist drill

Ya Lino, the Cork accents a right mess. I remember watching Cheltenham there and they'd be talking to that chick bookie from Cork, forget her name, and it was like listening to a brick in the head. Put me off langer women for life

Re: Nordie Accents
remember a few years back going to santa ponza for two weeks. start of my second week was sitting out on my balcony when all i could see was a sea of red getting off the transfer buses. it was like the whole of cork all had the same week hols, decided santa ponza, and my apartments. it was pure mental torture, langers everywhere. i was nearly hugging strangers on the street cause they had a dub accent! put me off ponza for life!

Re: Nordie Accents
All northern accents certainly do not sound the same! Some difference between a Donegal accent and a Belfast one! Even in a small county like Monaghan, there's a world of difference between the Carrick/Inniskeen one(awful!) and the likes of the one in Truagh at the Tyrone border. I suppose you'll find more differences in your own county but that's just a wee example.
I myself would have a fairly northern sounding accent for being from the middle of Monaghan,(But sure even then I'm only a few mile from Armagh) compared to most anyway. Maybe something to do with my mother being a nordie herself and me being up there often as a child, I don't know. When I first went to dublin people thought I was from all different counties from Armagh to Donegal to Derry! A few guessed right mind!
Also Niamh, I would say "Ach aye" a good bit myself, wouldn't just type it though!

Yeah I wasn't sure if you were but I've a good ear for a northern accent so I thought I'd stick my oar in! As I say, I've a fairly northern accent for the part of Monaghan that I'm from, and many used to mistake me for someone much further north. It's not as strong now but could still pass for a nordie! The ones in Truagh as I say are basically Tyrone men, just live in Monaghan! And the other extreme as I mentioned in Inniskeen is basically Louth!

Re: Nordie Accents
Ye might'nt be much use at football MMM but ye did produce the greatest poet of all time
Stony Grey Soil
O stony grey soil of Monaghan The laugh from my love you thieved;
You took the gay child of my passion And gave me your clod-conceived.
You clogged the feet of my boyhood And I believed that my stumble
Had the poise and stride of Apollo And his voice my thick-tongued mumble.
You told me the plough was immortal! O green-life-conquering plough!
Your mandril strained, your coulter blunted In the smooth lea-field of my brow.
You sang on steaming dunghills A song of cowards' brood, You perfumed my clothes with weasel itch, You fed me on swinish food.
You flung a ditch on my vision Of beauty, love and truth. O stony grey soil of Monaghan You burgled my bank of youth!
Lost the long hours of pleasure All the women that love young men.
O can I still stroke the monster's back Or write with unpoisoned pen
His name in these lonely verses Or mention the dark fields where
The first gay flight of my lyric Got caught in a peasant's prayer.
Mullahinsha, Drummeril, Black Shanco- Wherever I turn I see
In the stony grey soil of Monaghan Dead loves that were born for me.
-Patrick Kavanagh.

Re: Nordie Accents
Double low blow mossbags! First a dig at the footballers(however right you may be! ), then that poem! Paddy may have been a poetic genius but as this one shows he couldn't wait to get out of the county! Mind you, I wouldn't want to stay in Inniskeen either!

Re: Nordie Accents
I alway type what I'm thinking MMM!! Hi, they don't sound the same there is a huge difference from the way I talk and the way derry city ones talk, south derry sounds more like the tyrone accent that it does the north derry one. But in saying that theres alot of southers Accents I couldnt distunguish the difference in.
