Re: catholic church
I think it has a lot to do with what it represents and who it's run by. It reminds a lot of people in Ireland about being brought up as a child not having two pennys to rub together and having to go to mass every sunday no matter what, abiding by lent and the other rules of the church (not eating breakfast before mass etc) and I dont think this is a happy memory for a lot of people.
Also, many many people in Ireland have bad feeling towards some of the people who run the Catholic church, both from childhood and from what's come out about them in recent times. Like even my dad was saying that if he got the chance he'd go back and kick the crap into the brothers who taught him in school, and how my granny got hit and canned for playing with a protestant child by nuns. This has turned a lot of people against the church as they are all negative feelings and experiences.
Finally I think the system of the Catholic Church and some of its ideas turn people against them. Things like the sexism in the church, or their stance on contraception or homosexuality. People consider it to be a very backward organization who they don't want any part of. Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone and all the members of the Catholic church but I think these may be the reasons why some people do not like the catholic church.

Just go and read some of the reports of the abuse that went on and how it was covered up (if you can stomach it). That's why

Well. Em, err, not quite. Unpopular as Brendan Smith may have been to some, he wont be as demonised as the Brendan Smyth in the picture.
