New Year Resolutions ....
Jaysus if someone put up a New Year Resolution thread on 3 December, I'd be the first to kick the **** out of them! But folks its three weeks to Xmas Eve and only four to New Years Eve! So someone's gotta do it!
To be honest JC has a personal motive. The suave and elegant 6' 4" character has largely disappeared in 2010 (and long before it in truth) - to be replaced by a man who is having more than his fair share of engine trouble. And methinks a lot of it may be self-inflicted!
March saw the onset of crippling abscesses - and they don't make the heart grow fonder! Sinuses were next up and remain a thorn in the nostrils. And now 'My Left Knee' is placing me positively in the pantheon of men who have lost it before they got it. I am reminded of the Kop anthem 'You Will Never Walk Alone' ... and find myself replacing Alone with Again!
Serious stuff - somewhat. Add to that JCs penchant for a keg of Heineken and a near score of Silk Cut purple per day and perhaps me is looking for trouble ... and not happy about it.
Bocerty will cycle from Croker to Tyrone - fair play - and I'd love to join him - but wouldn't last urining time. Jim is reffing and effing - wish I could. Sami is the mountain bike champion of the NorthernHemishere Yorkshire - I couldn't ride a bike down a bowling alley. NSG is making huge strides and most of the rest of you are probably reasonably fit - and fair play.
JC is about as fit as the English World Cup bid - and needs a re-focus and re-motivation. Nothing ruled in - nothing ruled out - but by God there will have to be serious changes in the New Year. Life is for living and that is hapening less and less pour moi. The next four weeks will see a major inventory take place!
I actually used to look at that Gerry Ryan thing (God rest him) - Operation Transformation I think - and feel I'd like a go. But fook it - gonna do it for myself! If I come up with mad things to help me along I am gonna nail ye all for spponsorship (for Hospices, my fav charity). Ye have been warned - oh - all suggestions and pointers welcome!
2011 - the rebirth of JC!

Re: New Year Resolutions ....
If you're serious about getting fit, I've a suggestion:
Do a lot of reading.
Read everything you can, be it on the internet or in books. Look up topics such as nutrition for fitness, how to get fit, best ways of getting fit, what exercise to do, etc. I can tell you now that you know next to nothing. When I first started about 5 years ago I thought to myself that getting fit was as simple as going out for a jog/run every day or every second day. How naive I was back then and what difference a bit of knowledge makes. Changes to your diet will improve you alone, even before you attempt some exercise.

SNAP
Except im 5 10 and dont smoke (except socially)
Went ten years hovering at about 10lbs above my fighting weight. The occasional game of indoor - a 10 mile cylce on a Saturday morning and the odd attempt to go for a brisk eveningwalk 2/3 evenings a week.
Work and kids meant I missed evey second week of the indoor - and then most weeks and then stopped
same with the cycling - make an occasional burst evey now and then which lasts for a fortnight
Over the last year weight has crept up to20 LBS over fighting weight which is the difference between lover handles and a pot belly - an extra jean size and 1/2 inch on the collar.
I know all that wrong but its the change thats the challenge
1. Take a few beers/glass of Vino always Thurs-Sun
2. Sausage rolls with coffee at elevenses
3. Crisps/Nuts/Cheese/Crackers etc with kids gone to bed beer/wine
4. Soft drink and crisps with lunchtime sambo
5. Raid the biscuit tin before bedtime
so all of the above to rule out plus 5 days execercise - deserve a drink but try and rule out Thurs and Sunday

These things are a waste of time.....Only tormenting and depriving yourself.....Personally I abandoned them about 40 years ago in a failed attempt to quit the fags.

A lot of similarities there O.
1. Almost identical. Thurs would be max 3 cans. Friday is a religious feast in the life of JC - 6/7 pints inyon local. Sat - 5/6 cans at home. Sun - a few pints if not in early or 2/3 cans if I am.
2. No - the scone on the way in is my only man.
3. Ditto - horsing back Sweet Chillis and bagels as I type!
4. Do a bit of that - Hunky Dory chives hard to pass.
5. Used to be a hoor for the sweet stuff but not so much anymore.
Funnily weight has never been an issue for me - I just never put it on. I haven't indulged in any training of any kind (I walk a bit rather than drive) in over 10 years. I can eat what I like - sometimes my diet leaves a lot to be desired - and don't put it on. My main prob is the smokes - chest in bits and hardly a breath. Thats the main worry for me. But I drink a lot of coffee too (only in work) and thats bad for the diet, and greasy fries, and other 'bad' shtuff ...

Re: New Year Resolutions ....
My new year will be about ensuring this time next year i am happier with myself, so i want to make sure im on the 2nd year of a degree, i want to learn to drive, i want to be fitter, i want to be lighter on the scales.
However if i fail in my attempts, i know that i have at least not got worse, there is no such thing as failure just different levels of success, just keep trying and applying the effort what you put in you will get out, and the words of Barrack Obama always keep me going in my training for the marathon yes i can, anyone can do anything so long as they apply themselves.

Re: New Year Resolutions ....
Driving will be a piece of piss NSG. I didn't learn til I was about 33/4 cos it would have got in the way of my drinking - I was chaffeured everywhere by the lads in the team anyway! But it is certainly one of the best things I ever did. And I love it now and would drive for hours to relax!
ps Good encouraging words there too.

I find that for the next 4 weeks it gives me an excuse to over-indulge in the things I intend to curtail

Hold up there a second Triona - wise words indeed - but why TF would I spend hours reading up stuff when you have already done it?? Sure thats daft! You can be my online Personal Trainer. No point in me being naive at my age when you have the knowledge - sure that'd only be making fools of both of us when you think about it. I can pm ya me weight, height, age, bad habits, good habits, injuries and we can get down to it immediately. This could take off lad. Now where's me beer and smokes ....

Once again, if you're serious, I've no problem in giving you a bit of advice. Or at least point you in the right direction. PM me if you want.
However, be careful of advice given over the internet (mine included). I've no qualifications. I just have a general interest and my own experience. Similar to getting medical advice/self diagnosis over the internet.
