FAO married lads on here
When ye propposed to yer birds did ye ask her Fathers permission first? Did they really give you their blessing(looking at you there Boxty)
Those of ye with daughters would any prospective husbands have to ask your permission first?

Nope. I was instructed by him(shotgun in hand) to do the decent thing.

IF you expect the Father in Law to foot the bill for the wedding well then it might be polite to ask first
Otherwise naw. I told mine afterwards and only managed to get €5k out of him.
I's say Boxty came from a different era where asking for for the blessing (Accompanied by a matchmaker) was merely a rouse to start the Dowry negotiations - 5 acres from the top field, 4 fresians, a dozen hens and access to a bull subject to 5 days notice

My opening line to future FIL was 'I'm about to do you a big favour ....'
As for my wain I keep telling her that as soon as a lad arrives at the door and says 'Excuse me Mr Cluxton, can I ..." SLAM!!! Door shuts in his face. This piece of acting (and variation) comes up every so often in Chez Jayo ahd she laughs her head off every time. I think she thinks I'm messing ....

Re: FAO married lads on here
Mrs. Clarke's father is a modern-day witchdoctor in the amazon region (yes, seriously), so I decided not to make the trip to ask permission, for fear of getting turned into a Derryman or something.
