I think it's an absolute disgrace that people judge me by my username, which happens to be my name in real life as well. Perhaps I will change my name, not just my username but my real life one as well. The only problem is I'm not sure what I want my new name to be. Maybe something along the lines of...I don't know...Brendan Smyth???

The user was never deleted, it was changed. So you broke your word and continued to post on the site, while claiming victory.

Later you resigned from the site (main page anyway) due to some issue.

It's the likes of Dr. Shephard that give wind up merchants the thrill they seek. While I am not a WUM myself, I'd imagine that seeing a poster threaten to stop posting over someone's username is exactly the type of thrill that a WUM would seek.
