Player Power - good or bad
As another manager departs the scene as a result of player power are we slowly reaching the point where the tail is wagging the dog????
Cork footballers and hurlers, Limerick hurlers and now Westmeath footballers have joined the 'party'. Is it something which should be condoned or is it a case of allowing the players to have so much influence over who the manager is.

Hard to know. Players are putting much more effort/time than ever before but only one team can win. GPA now officially recognised - dunno what way that will change things.

I think it's a good thing.. It shows desire, it shows that they're not just content with being a county player and nothing more, it shows they want to go somewhere and they want to win and are willing to work and fight for that.

Re: Player Power - good or bad
It has definitely gone too far. I would be all for a players representative, team captain or whoever, having some input into selection of a manager but this idea of rebellion when things aren't going right is all wrong.
I know it's not all one way, I'm sure there are some big egos involved where the managers are concerned, but someone has to call the shots and it can't be the players.
Unfortunately, it does seem as though there's only ever one winner when this sort of situation arises.

Re: Player Power - good or bad
Player power is bad although good managers and county boards will give the players a vehicle to represent their views and opinions - with the understanding that they may or may not be acted upon.
There is a conflict of interest for players when they get involved in judging or choosing their manager. What would some wet behind the ears 21 year old know about IC managerment and about what it takes to win and be successful. But nowadays in some counties that player feels he has a right to question and criticise a managers approach or ability.
Rubbish.

Player Powers
Galway ousted Ger Loughlan aswell even the Mayo manager who got them to the final in 2006 was ousted i have forgotten his name. Players are there to play not manage and vise versa for managers. The whole pride of the jersey seems to be gone out the window, when you have players not playing because of reasons like a difference of opinion with the manager. I am a manager of a team i wont say who, lucky i dont have that problem but if i did and the board supported me by all means that player or group of players wont play for the team again. You might say your ruinning the team, im not, how far do you think westmeath will go this season or limerick, both teams relegated in the league, it has taken 2 years for cork to recover because they were so worried about loosing the ' big names ' well feck them, If the people of cork spent them years blooding new talent they will be winning all irelands again in no time but now they are left with an aging team and a manager who the players could turn on in the moriing, Best of luck to them in the NHL1 final but as i said earlier the gas tank wont last them till september so Galway by 7 on sunday.

Re: Player Power - good or bad
I totally disagree with the whole player power thing. In the case of the Cork hurlers were the senior players worried about competition if there were new kids on the block and thats why they ousted McCarthy? What about these young lads that stepped into the breach when they wouldn't play? What would motivate any of these to play for Cork when the older guys retire?
The same applies with the Limerick hurlers now. You have to applaud the county delegates in Limerick (the clubmates of these rebellious ex players) who want to keep him there. Limerick hurling will come back again and I hope that they continue to back him and see how they get on.

Getting the jersey should be enough motivation especially a cork jersey.
