What's the point of Laois?
I may have asked a similar question in the past but really - what is the point of Laois? I was in Limerick and Cork this week. Mostly motorways all the way - unbelievably fast and efficient - no sign of a town or village - until you get to Laois.
Are motorways banned in Laois? Is there some historical heritage order? Bad enough they have no motorways but you have to pass through ... Mountrath (and you will, trust me!) Borris-in-Ossory (Boris Karloff has more appeal) on the Limerick leg and Abbeyleix (about 2 businesses left at this stage) and Durrow - these two aren't the worst but there was a 2 mile southbound tailback into Abbeyleix - glad I was going the other way.
Why are Laois so behind everyone else. They are smack bang in the middle of the country and have Sweet F All motorways - the whole county is both a bottle neck and a pain in the neck? Do the NRA know Laois exists? Do they have a County Council? Add in the horrendous accent, the limp GAA support, the prison, the lack of any famous Laois person and you really have to suggest that the solution would be to build motorways all the way around the county - bypass it compeletely - and just leave them at it. Makes sense to me.

But mullins Laois is like what a cop at an accident scene says to the crowd - move along here folks ... nothing to see... The only county and towns and villages they should have tried to hide is the last to go ...

Listen to the typical dub. Not a clue about the rest of the country. Do you even realise that loads of Irish counties don't have any motorway?

Jesus Ronald you have made my point - Laois is slap bang in the middle of the country. So if I want to go to Limerick (under duress only) Kerry, Cork, Kilkenny, Tipp (not if I can help it), Clare, parts of Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow - I have to pass through appalling Laois villages with as much life as Glasnevin Cemetry. Yes I know where Mayo and Donegal - and Kerry are. On the peripheral Western seaboard - nobody goes through any of those counties to get anywhere for business reasons. Tourists do not like motorways. Do the Donegal pony and trap society want 120kph cars whizzing thru Mary's Gap above in Dungloe.
You guys are destinations - ye don't need motorways - we just need them if we decide to go and visit ye. Turf fires, ceol agus craic, thatched cottages and Arran sweaters are all we require of ye guys.

Ah yes, the true Ireland-uncommercialised Ireland. Enjoy yere smog-filled cities, we have fresh, unpolluted air in the Wesht. Say hello to your grey buildings, street gangs and polluted Liffey-we have quaint houses, neighbourly people and clean waters!
Yes, ye may have your motorways, but we have something money can't buy-character and a true sense of Irishness!

Re: What's the point of Laois?
Jayo, may I come to your defence!?
RMcD and Essie, you really have to experience Laois to understand where Jayo is coming from. It is a barren hole of nothingness. Recently I travelled through the Kalahari desert. It had more to offer. Mountrath must be the most depressing town in Ireland. Why make us go through it? It really is a breath of fresh air to hit the Tipp border when going to Limerick/Kerry.
Ok, going back on topic, I would guess that the three most-used roads in the country are Dublin-Cork, Dublin-Belfast and Dublin-Limerick (partly cos of the Cork traffic going a bit of the journey). The Dublin-Belfast and Dublin-Cork roads are second to none, Ireland-wise. Would they now please concentrate on bypassing the (w)hole of County Laois??!!??

Re: What's the point of Laois?
Ah Laois isn't the worst, I've many fond memories of the steam trashing in Stradbally and then more hazy memories in the same field at the Picnic years later.
But Kilkenny is a different story, apart from the Hurling, the castle and the statutes I can't think of one thing about the place. Absolutely nothing.

Re: What's the point of Laois?
Well the influence of this forum knows no bounds. The powers that be read this thread carefully and today we were responsible for completing half the job! No more will you have to travel through Abbeyleix, Durrow or Cullahill! Mind you Morrisseys will be missed - though a detour could be arranged. Next on the agenda is Mountrath and Borris in Sorry - I would have preferred if they razed them first but it won't be long.
So remember - if you want action taken on any matter just post a thread here and it shall be done on earth.....
