Shock of the Day?
Well there were a few funny ones today. Roscommon getting whipped double scores at home to Cavan - it will make Boxty happy anyway and underlines the point he has frequently made here that Tommy Carr is a top class manager. Bit of a shock in Newbridge too where the Orchard maestro got gunned down by Down. Leitrim too (Ulster managers also ) were surprisingly tripped up at home to lowly Waterford - while Joe Kernan's Galway took a bit of a pasting in Mayo. Clare beating Wicklow was a minor surprise but for me one result stands out as the shock of the day.
I am totally shocked at the scoreline from Killarney today. I mean ....... we only won by two points!!!

Re: Shock of the Day?
not that big of a shock result, but Galway were shocking bad today - Tyrone are going to have to improve 200% to have half a chance against Mayo next week

Re: Shock of the Day?
Leitrim are shocking. I had waterford backed and a draw backed. Don't know what Moran and butterbean are at!
Cavan's trouncing of the rossies was unexpected but apart from that i wasn't too surprised. I think Mayo are an excellent side.

Re: Shock of the Day?
Galway traditionally start the League slowly but always finish with three or four victories.
Micko has never taken the League seriously with any county, I'm sure his record in the League is dreadful. Wicklow are a team in heavy training looking at the first round of the LSFC.
Down winning by so much is more of a shock than Kildare losing by so much if you get me.
Kerry were missing five or six players, weren't they?

Re: Shock of the Day?
I think Cavan beating Roscommon by the margin that they did was probably the shock of the day along with Down beating Kildare. Kildare would be expected to challenge for promotion while DOwn are considered a mid-table team at best.
Mayo trouncing Galway was in no way a shock.everyone is going on about how good Joe Kernan is but you are only as good as your players and (apart from Meehan & Joyce) Galway are a team of average players. we should have won by more but for Mort's sending off but im still happy with a 7 point win

I agree it was not a shock. John needed that result today more than Joe and it showed. No doubt its Mayo's all-ireland to lose now, delighted for them .Have mentioned earlier in some other thread somewhere that Joe was hired to keep his eyes on the 'bigger picture', something Galways manager types have been failing in since old John himself called us a shower of 'fancy dans' in a smelly dressing room in Hyde Park circa 1998

Re: Shock of the Day?
whether its the 1st round of the league or the All-Ireland final a Mayo-Galway game is always played hard by players on both sides so dont go telling me that we only beat ye cause it was round one of the league and Galway dont give a crap about it.
Galway needed a win yesterday so much more than Mayo did.Johnno is in his 4th year and there is nbot one person in the county calling for his head or anything like that whereas Galway have put huge pressure on Kernan to success cause he is such a high profile manager who they expect to lead them to an All-Ireland.
Im not saying that Mayo are now going to go on and win the all-ireland just cause they beat Galway but its always a good way to start a season by beating your number 1 rivals so easily at home

Longford being beaten by Carlow was more embarrassing than a shock.
Cavans emphatic win over the Rossies raised a few eyebrows.

Loyally, please elaborate! It's quite the opposite. Galway beat Westmeath and Dublin in the first 2 rounds last year, if my memory serves me correct. Galway have by no mean a reputation of starting 'slowly' as you put it.
The fact that Mayo won, was because they outplayed Galway in every postition. They were better than Galway all over the field and Mayo should have won by a lot more. Their Midfield was excellent-completely dominating the centre of the field. Their defence was copper-tight and their forwards had a good day out. Séamus O'Shea played some great stuff and my Man of the Match was Kevin McLoughlin. An absolutely fantastic asset in the defence. And, as I predicted, Ronaldson put up a great show-he's going to be a really important player for Mayo and is one right now.
The reason Galway was lost was not due to having a 'slow' start to the league, it was simply because Mayo were on fire, and dominated throughout the game. Galway had about 10 or 11 of their first-team players, we had about 7 or 8, with the added burden of having 2 long-serving veterans retiring during the week.
Fair play to Mayo, they put on one heck of a showing!

I'm just stating the facts, Sami! Loyal made that remark about Galway which is unfounded, and it seemed to undermine Mayo's win yesterday.

Any money says Galway are team in the gym. They've barely seen a ball bounce in 2010 I'm guessing. All last week's result shows is that Mayo are more forward than Galway, a tradition that I'd normally assiociate with Galway footballers at this time of year. Armagh were a similiar enough League team when Joe was in charge up there, weren't they?

I heard that Kerry and Tyrone were so gobsmacked by Mayo's performance that their seriously considering packing it in for the year and taking up hopscotch or something instead.

I can confirm that this is true. Doing weights at 6am, 3 one hour sessions a week before work. Galway welcomes the Ulster method
