Monachy and the Royal Family - is there any point?
The Royal Family have been in the news a fair bit this week with the Queen and the Duke of Ed. in Bermuda and my mate Charles heading up to Cumbria to see the flooding. Has got me thinking about what the Royal family actually do for the country, I know a lot of people think the monachy is pointless and a waste of money and the country would be fine without one/ However the Royals have a unique place in the hearts of the British people and they are revered with almost God-like status by some people. Are the Royals here to rule the country, make laws and control the economy (they're not) or are they simply a uniquely British institution to make everyone feel good about themselves and proud of their country and feel special when a Royal is around. Can't think of that many countries off the top of my head that have a monachy - would Britain make it without one?

I've often thought it mad that the brits put up with the monarchy Sami. The largest land owners in the UK and "kept" by the state. And what do they give in return???
BTW, the righteous anger that the Irish people have felt over the years was often misdirected at the royal family as they were perceived as symbols of the Union. I always saw them as a bunch of inbred Germans myself.

Not one for the royal family if truth be told, only Phillip is good for a laugh now and again but sure they have him more or less locked in a cupboard so he can't drop any more clangers!
If someone can explain to me when we live in a world of equal rights and equal opportunity for all that there is a family deemed so (apart from inbred) important that they are paid for by the rest of the population and convince me of the use of them then i might listen.
I once got thrown out of the Martime Museum in Sydney for slating one of the guides who said that he thought the queen was "doing a great job". I asked him what exactly she done and why did she deserve to be treated differently to the bloke selling the Big Issue at Circular Quay, he tried to ignore me so i launched into him and kept at him until i eventually got asked to leave!
I don't care how "little" they cost british taxpayers, the simple fact is i don't want my tax contribution to go to keep them, make the fcukers work for it!! After all they're Germans and Greeks, get the working at the German Christmas markets or selling kebabs!
No point in having them and we should do what the French done to theirs!

Very true. The subsidies from the public is one thing BE but I'm always amazed at the land that they own. How much money must they get every year from it? It's crazy that they are still funded while sitting on all that wealth.
