The Real County Guide
Starting with ... Leinster
Longford: Bit of a GAA non-entity to be honest and not much else going for it either. Road infrastructure has improved hugely in recent years so at least you can get out of it faster.
Westmeath: One lousy Leinster win in a county that boasts such mythical towns as Athlone and Mullingar! No wonder its more famous for its lakes.
Kilkenny: Unbeatable hurlers and a nice vibrant city but their lack of interest in football detracts from their status –as does Urlingford.
Laois: Another GAA wilderness at senior level and a county that struggles to shake off its inferiority complex. Home of a large psychiatric institution and prison sums it up.
Louth: Wee county in name, outlook and ambition. The M1 will ensure you need only pass through.
Offaly: Totally overachieving GAA county with legends in both codes. A few years ago the county to look up to but now falling back into the pack but you will always get Rhode in Offaly.
Wexford: GAA county that is living on past glories. Lovely coastal towns destroyed by the influx of Southside Dubs and after that you are left with New Ross - not good.
Wicklow: GAA disasters – only headlines coming from disciplinary issues. Is next to Dublin which saves it somewhat as you never have to spend the night there.
Kildare: Pretentious GAA types who have tried to do a Chelsea in GAA terms. Most towns now by-passed – a blessing – and a superb county to pass through when going somewhere interesting.
Dublin: Probably the top city to visit in the world. Full of sophisticated people, exquisite sights and wit and a GAA record that surpasses almost all others when taken across both codes.
Carlow: Where to start. GAA – zilch. Fantastic by-pass now runs around the village but you may still find yourself having to drive through Myshall, Leighlinbridge, Tullow etc – its like being in the film Deliverance.
Meath: A suburb of Dublin with a mediocre GAA record considering its size and proximity to the metropolis. Some bright spots – Trim and Tara blotted by the likes of Kells, Nobber etc.

Re: The Real County Guide
Connacht
Mayo: Totally underachieving county in GAA and all other terms. If you like rustic stuff and want to go to Ireland of the 30s (like the postcards) head to Mayo. Bring candles.
Galway: Not a bad GAA record but a county that thinks it belongs with the big boys when it clearly does not. Yes you have Galway city and Clifden and Barna – but then you have Tuam and Ballinasloe which just drags it way down. Ahascragh …. Well.
Sligo: What a waste of a beautiful location. You have the glorious Ben Bulbin and if you bother to climb it your reward is a view of the town. GAA dismal enough and poor Yeats must have cursed his luck at his mother’s birthplace choice.
Leitrim: The real jewel of the West. Have punched way above their weight in GAA terms and full of glorious towns, villages, lakes and beauty. Home of culinary Ireland and great folk who are constantly held back by neighbours.
Roscommon: Not a bad GAA record and some nice towns but struggles to be taken seriously as a real destination and with names like Strokestown, Elfin (sic), Castlecoote and Rooskey its not hard to work out why.

Re: The Real County Guide
Munster
Cork: Good GAA record but appaling attitude to the GAA ethos. In reality a different place and race – yes Kinsale is good but is it Irish? Youghal and Cobh??? And then you have West Cork – drowning in its own importance.
Kerry: Fair GAA record but a funny place. A welcome for all with hand out to shake and the other in your pocket. Yes some nice places in mid-Summer but try going there in November. Watch the Field to get a flavour.
Clare: Poor enough GAA people but great for the music, craic agus ceoil. Some nice towns and villages but a bit wild at times. Cliffs of Moher a great asset if you can raise the mortgage to park there.
Limerick: Poor GAA record and does not need any more negative publicity as it is more than well able to generate its own. But there is Thomond Park – and then there is Foynes …. A bewildering experience.
Tipperary: The name Premier County sums up a county who are fairly fond of themselves and see themselves as better than they are. Again the roads make it a good place to drive through on your way to a real destination.
Waterford: Middling GAA record but a good city and some wonderful beaches and hidden coves and gems – and Lismore and the Vee and then they go and feck it all up with …. Tramore.
Cork: Good GAA record but appaling attitude to the GAA ethos. In reality a different place and race – yes Kinsale is good but is it Irish? Youghal and Cobh??? And then you have West Cork – drowning in its own importance.

Re: The Real County Guide
Ah ... and Ulster ...
Fermanagh: Underachieving GAA lot full of lakes and some big towns but Enniskillen not for me nor would I long for Kesh. There is always Belleek if you are into over priced cups and saucers.
Donegal: Desperate GAA record and a totally overrated county in lots of ways. Full of rugged beauty and that’s just the women but while the infrastructure may be described as quaint – I call it crap. May be feeling left behind … hence the No?
Monaghan: GAA risible in this county full of Cs – Clontibret, CMX, Clones, Castleblayney. There may be gold in ‘tibret but very few nuggets anywhere else. You’d sure earn your money if you worked in Monaghan Tourist Office
Derry: Non-descript GAA record and hard to think of anything else about Derry either. Quaint city walls but .. Portstewart?, Kilrea?, Coleraine? – well at least there is an airport for a quick escape.
Armagh: Recent GAA underachievers but then no change there. Majestic city and county with Ireland’s greatest cathedral and the Ulster Observatory – oh and Lurgan, Craigavon and Drumportadown.
Down: Historic GAA greats and a nicely appointed county with plenty to attract the discerning (ie Southern) shopper. Mourne Mountains and Strangford Lough and then John Travolta’s squeeze in Grease – Tandra Gee.
Tyrone: Recently invented county –circa 2003. Nothing to do here but play GAA something that has dawned on the locals only since 2003. Ulster American Folk Museum a top attraction – apparently! - but there is the pretty little town of Omagh.
Antrim: Best GAA county in Ireland per some sources. Has all the possibilities - potentially vibrant city, Giants Causeway, Lough Neagh, Old Lammas Fair and Bushmills – yet if you won a weekend there you’d be inclined to fob it off to someone you didn’t really like.
Cavan: Once a great GAA county now a thing of history – like the county itself. I always think when I’m in Cavan I’m lost and should be somewhere else cos there is no real reason to go there – must be in some kind of (Bally)haise!

That is dreadfull Eddie Windsor. I amhere now in Killorglin and tis like a summer's day and there is plenty of tourist too. And a fair GAA record? Sorry but we're undoubtedly the best county that ever kicked a Gaelic football. The team of this decade and most others as well. You are ill-informed indeed.

Re: The Real County Guide
Just read what you posted here Jayo.
I noticed you didnt call Dublin 'recent underachievers'
By the time Dublin start challenging again Kilkenny will have an All Ireland in football.
Tandragee is in Armagh too.

He was a good mate of Sami's - bit of blue blood in him. Used to walk the corgis and give Sami a lift home from vespers in the Scottish highlands of an evening. The odd time they'd nick some gin from the ould great grandma - bless her.

Ah here now Jayo a Dublin man generalizing a whole county due to the actions of a small group of people? Imagine what we'd come out with if we did that for Dublin!

Yeah point taken. Country folk never generalise about Dublin people - aside from Dutch Gold, late for matches, tracksuit clad, car thieves, unemployed, druggies etc, etc - my mistake ....
