Celebrity Bainisteoir 2010
I can't stand reality TV shows and if I had known before the start that Fiona Looney devised the concept I'd have given it a skip - but I didn't ... so I did!
And it wasn't half bad either. A lot of the qualities of the GAA club scene come through in the programme. It was really good to see Whelo rescuing the Meath lads from a fate worse than .... Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh. She was so clueless she must be in with a strong shout for the Meath job. Whelo showed her the ropes though and the respect the Nobber lads had the minute the Legend arrived was palpable. I suppose like all the Meath lads he lorded it over in his day they were shitting it ... and afraid to get his back up. So they responded and won - albeit against a Fermanagh team - where there are about 3 clubs. Indeed some of the Erne players were about 11 - but they were good nonetheless. It took a guy called Brian Farrell to win it and he was good. I remember Loyal telling us about a Brian Farrell who was to be that week's next great white hope for Meath. This guy is playing Intermediate but I reckon he might get a run on the Meath Juniors.
So I may tune in to the rest of the series - though may give the Crystal Things week a miss - can't abide that kinda crap at all. Looking forward to seeing Kickhams in it too. Rumour has it that the winning bainisteoir will be approached by the Mayo County Board to take the reins there .......

Re: Celebrity Bainisteoir 2010
Well the big Final is approaching. The good denizens of Ballymun are four square behind their team. The parish is awash with red and green - bunting and flags abound. Kids have faces painted and the schools (where one Shane Ryan teaches!) are buzzing - or as they say in the 'Mun - there's a deadly buzz!
Can they beat the Kerrymen who looked rather formidable in beating what I thought was a very good Kilconly side? Parnell Park should have a decent crowd and Castleisland will likely bring more to the game than Kerry would bring to an All Ireland Final! C'mon the 'Mun!

Re: Celebrity Bainisteoir 2010
It's not a bad show and it's good for the clubs involved as regards publicity and fundraising.
But the "celebrity" isn't really in charge of the team.
Whoever the teams normal manager is picks the team with some input from the celebrities mentor.
The tactics are gone through away from the cameras a few hours before the game and the "celebrity takes over from there.
I know this because a neighbouring club reached the final last year under Catherine Lynch. Mickey Quinn was her mentor.
Mickey would arrange training and any comment he made during it would be repeated word for word by catherine Lynch.
She had a microphone attached to her while he did not. Therefore it looked like she was running the session.
One day that Quinn was unavailable for a recorded training session, she brought her brother to take the session (he was a decent club player) as she really hadn't a clue and showed no interest.

Met her several times, the biggest attention seeker I have ever seen and as for her brand of "comedy", anyone who finds it funny really should be destroyed humanely.

There would be more humour if you were having your fingernails pulled with a pliers. Typical of RTE to give her her own show though. And Father Ted was turned down ...

In fairness Jayo, what would you expect?! Castleisland would have a reputation for having a good number of travellers.....

Aye WB that technically correct - but I think they didn't offer cos it would've been a no! Anything good they ever had lasted no time .... Motto would seem to be - if the public (licence payers) like it then it can't be good ....

I'll tell ya I wouldn't kick that Maired Farrell one out of bed... You hardly have her number Jayo?
Catherine Lynch on the late late was the biggest disgrace seen on TV since the highlights of the Cork v Cavan game.. If a TV licence inspector ever comes to my door I'll consider her a valid excuse for non payment.
