Kerry Football
well how do kerry do it year after year decade after decade great player after great player , most counties go through some sort of boom time when they have a good group of players and win either the league or the provincial or even the all ireland , but how do kerry do it ok the have the odd lull but for 99 % of counties these lulls can last for years and years but kerry just carry on counties come and go but kerry are always there , if you were to pick the best 15 footballers ever well you be hard picked to pick anyone outside of that county

Re: Kerry Football
Tradition. That's it.
You are born, you hear stories about the greats from an early age, you are encouraged to play at Primary/National school, the street league, everything.
Gaelic football is what they do. Yes there are other things in 2010 and in Tralee last year I was horrified to see more Celtic gansies than Kerry, but it doesn't matter.
Such is the tradition that Kerry do not need to have successful winning minor sides, all they need is a few coming through every so often.
keeps them ticking.
As for the all time greats? certainly, 14 Kerry men and Kevin McG..............

But you could find a kerryman with credentials for every slot.
You might not select him, but he would be considered.

Interesting observation. From 8 upwards they have men in the frame for all slots but from 7 backwards there are some gaps....6 and 7 for example...

They don't work, spend all day in the fields and have nothing to do but play football ... that's why.

You could add Centre Forward into that, and Full-Forward also - some excellent players, but no-one who would be screaming out for inclusion.
But still, the point is a fair one, you would have strong contenders in virtually every spot. Then again, they have won roughly a third of all the all-irelands ever contested, so it stands to reason that at least 5 of final 15 would be Kerrymen. From memory I think both the team of the century and team of the millenium have 6 Kerrymen, although not the same 6 on each side.

Re: Kerry Football
as an avid reader of the gaelic life , i find joe brollys articles very witty and incitefull,
Joe wrote an article about colreaines success in the derry championship this year. he started off that a lot fo successful teams come from the storeis handed down in the scullery , fathers and grandfathers won championships this is of inspiration to the current generation. this is usually a country thing where as with town teams its more liekly to be based on youth success, lads won all around them and hacve no fear of going for the bigger prizes once they hit senior level.
i would imagine that the stories in kerry scullerys on past all irelands won would be of huge motivation to any generation - like jeepers these men won all irelands by the bucket full if we are to be deemed a success we need acouple too. itwould be some driving factor.
sure the cute kerry hoors always say a man with five all irelands will just pass you off the the man with six!

Before thinking about any other Kerry positions I must say that in my all time great team, I have Bomber Liston at full forward ahead of the Mayo man.
It was no coincidence that their great years came with Bomber. o close games with the Dubs then.
Brilliant player.
Centre forward III can think of a man who played in about 11 finals. Every one when he started at number 11 they won. when he didn't.............they lost.
But you wouldn't have him I admit, but you might consider him, with 8 winning appearances.

Kerry have a belief and a swagger about them every time they play. The confidence you get while putting on the kerry jersey and looking back on their tradition. Also otherteams are affected by the sight of the Kerry jersey and that helps. It's the same with Tipp and Killkenny in the hurling. They believe in themselves and want to upkeep their tradition

Very true bigman. Every time I put on my Kerry jersey and walk around Dublin I do so with a swagger. I like to walk up and down Henry Street of a Saturday evening pointing out the fact to any young Dublin fan that we're the greatest and always will be. I like to let them bask in the glory of my Kerry jersey, and send them home dreaming of one day playing in an AI Final against the greatest county in Ireland.
Oh and welcome aboard - glad you could join us!

Given their generation-spanning famine, I can't imagine they'd be that fussy who they played in it!

If you walk with a swagger people always assume you know where you're going....
It will be interesting to see the gait of Triona as he stumbles off the train in Mallow later on. Hopefully, the internal radiator system will have kept him warm for the length of the journey...You can be sure he isn't full of porter anyway, for the hoor is too mean to spend money....

Well as soon as I got off the train to change at Mallow didn't I come across 3 lovely Rathmore girls who were more than willing to keep me warm on the way home........
And as for paying for porter, there's no local that pays for porter on a Christmas Eve in Firies!

You can't really call me "Kerry football folk", I've only 4 Celtic Crosses. The next door neighbour has 5!
