Martin Penrose could possibly be facing a battle to be fit for the first round clash against Monaghan, Apparently he sustained a knee injury playing for his club Aghyaran against the Rock at the weekend.

Joining Penrose in a race for fitness for the Monaghan game is goalkeeper Pascal McConnell who hasn't featured for his club in the last two outings, He sustained a hip injury in the league match against Meath. Stephen O'Neill also had to be substituted from the weekends league encounter with Newtownstewart with a hamstring strain, although its not believed to be too serious and was more a precautionary measure.

Looks like Enda McGinley joins Joe McMahon as being definitely out. Pity about McGinley, as he was one of our better players in the early league matches, and looked to be coming back to form again.

As for the rest, Sean Cavanagh's fitness is a major concern. While I've been critical of his form in recent years, Cavanagh played very well in the last few league games, and would be a huge loss to an already lightweight forward line.

Any more new on the Penrose injury Mugsy? Is Justin McMahon back playing for Omagh again yet?

TC, It would appear that McGinley will be on the long term injury list, We played Errigal last night and there was no sign of Enda at all. Davy Harte also didn't play but don't know the reason for that. I don't think that Cavanaghs injury is as bad as first feared and Jordan suffered no more than a dead leg against Cookstown.

Justin McMahon was to play for Omagh in last nights league defeat to Killyclogher, perhaps Boc can fill us in on whether or not he lined out for Omagh who are really struggling in the league. I didn't hear anymore word on Penrose, I don't think he lined out for Aghyaran last night anyway

Mugsy i wasnt at the game unfortunately as i just welcomed a new addition to the family last Wednesday, however i can confirm that McMahon was on the field of play, to say he was palying is maybe taking it a bit too far considering we actually beat them!!!! Martin Swift was not playing though, not sure what the problem is but i know he only made a comeback from a hamstring injury last week so he may have twinged it again.

I believe we will again be ulster champions. The two main threats earlier I felt would come from either Derry or Donegal. Having watched Donegal's ultra defensive style I'm now not so sure, I thought Derry might have been a different prospect under the stewardship of JB but the loss of Paddy Bradley and the lack of a settled midfield may be their downfall, I don't expect the Ulster champiosnhip to be pretty on the eye this year at all but still expect the anglo-celt to stay where its at.

On the All Ireland, I'm not so sure, If we get a bit of the luck that kept us alive in '08 then who knows where it might end up, but we don't have the same ammo up front anymore, the cutting edge of Canavan or Cavlan, the tireless workrate of Dooher and McGinley, unless there is a dying kick from the likes of Stevy O'Neill and Mugsy and whether Brian McGuigan can carry forward his good league form onto the championship stage again. We live in hope!

Why?
They have a number of handy forwards but are a team that is built on foundations of sand, I actually think that the new machines will give them their fill of it on Saturday night and expect Jamie Clarke to have a major impact on the result - He's a young lad with a big future ahead of him.

Well sure, we'll see what they have to offer on Saturday evening, but I don't envisage Down getting past the quarter finals this year - Egg on my face if I'm proved wrong.....

I imagined it would be a big surprise if Down beat Armagh unless I am losing touch.

I know Down made the final last year but they only beat a Kerry without two of their stars, and on a day when ALL of Donaghy's efforts were saved and kerry's goal was ruled out.Fair play to Down for taking advantage but you couldn't see lightning strike twice.

last year I said the Dubs could be the surprise team and do well via the back door, and they did. This year there is still not a lot out there.

I an surprised Stevie O,Neill is still going at county level and fear that there will be no threat from Ulster this year. Tyrone are probably as good as any in Ulster but Ulster is very poor at the moment, and has been for some years, glossed over by the success of two sides in recent times.......

Down are a decent side, but it will take a huge effort for them to win Ulster by going through Armagh, Derry and whoever comes out of the other side.

Down's success this year will be determined by how much they have improved, as their form of last year will not be good enough to win them an all-ireland. Kerry were made for them last year, with their suspensions and slow legs in midfield/defence, and Kildare were extremely unlucky in the semi-final. Down played well in the final, but were well beaten in the end, much like when they played Cork in the league this year.

I'd rate them as a top 6-7 side, but they are yet to show that they are anything more than that.

I seen enough of Down to see that they will win Ulster if they want..Tyrone are an ageing team that have very little left in the tank..

Yes i seen Cork wasn't impressed with them thats my opinion anyway....

Oh they'll want to, as they haven't won anything of any consequence in 17 years. I can assure you that James McCartan, Brian McIvor and Paddy Tally are not hoping for an early introduction to the qualifiers.

Down are a good side, but they have some major problems, namely a liability at full-back, no subs for defence or midfield, and a small, light forward line. Their games last summer against Cork and Tyrone, and again against Cork this year in the league, showed that they can trouble anyone early on with their skill and pace, but they can be ground down by a bigger, stronger side. Again, lack of good enough subs is big part of this problem.
