There must be a twist in the story somewhere but I'm not sure what it yet. I have a rather far out theory but...

my moosus has a theory that the copper with the missing face is DCI Hunt and that its all a figment of his mind that he is in a coma but then it goes all like LOST... see what 9pm tomoro brings i will be glued to the tele!

I was thinking...

Gene and Jim both cannot die (immortal).

Gene stays alive by keeping people close to him (i.e. Sam Tyler, Alex Drake).
Jim stays alive by having people die in his world and taking life from them (which would explain why when the undercover policewoman got run over and the copper died in the prison, Jim was there with his hands on their temple etc)

Jim is therefore trying to get Alex to distrust Gene, so she leaves him.
Gene hates Jim so much because he knows that when Jim is about people will end up being killed.

You know in the episode with the undercover police woman who gets attacked? Ray takes a bit of a shine to her? At the end of that episode she gets run over by a criminal trying to do a runner in a van (who is then shot by Hunt). As she dies, Jim comforts here and holds her head.

In a later episode, the black policeman, Viv, dies in the prison during the inmates rebellion thing. Jim is there again holding is head when he dies.

And all through it Gene has hated Jim, and Jim has hated Gene.

I think everyone was like Alex - all died and were in a limbo between life and death. Jim was the only one who knew about it. When they went into the pub they excited the limbo, but Gene stayed to take charge of the next lot who came through.

It's a limbo world between life and death. They are all dead in their real world. Gene is like a guardian. He guides them to heaven (the pub). Jim is like the devil, trying to get them to his 'new department' aka HELL (red lift going down). Jim tries to tempt alex to hell one more time with her daughter's scarf but fails. Gene goes back to his job for the next lot coming through (iphone guy). SORTED
