Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
Lance Armstrong has confirmed he will compete in the Tour of Ireland in August.
The Texan, who has returned to racing four years after retiring with the aim of winning an eighth Tour de France, will use his appearance in the much lower profile Irish event to promote his cancer charity.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) have organised the first 'Livestrong Global Cancer Summit' from August 24 to 26 in the Dublin, the day after Armstrong completes the stage race.
'Unless we act on a global level, cancer will be the leading cause of death by 2010,' said Armstrong.
'Our goal is to be the catalyst that brings everyone together to fight cancer - from survivors, like me, to world leaders and policymakers who must commit completely to the effort to avoid a public health catastrophe.
'The summit provides an invaluable opportunity to stand up for the 28 million cancer survivors worldwide and to create a unified effort to control cancer through new commitments to action.'
The 37-year-old, who has competed in the Tour of California and the Tour Down Under this year, last took part in the Irish race in 1992.
Tour of Ireland director Darach McQuaid said the global sports star can use the event to promote his cancer message all over the world.
'The Tour of Ireland could not be more proud than to have Lance Armstrong riding once again on Irish roads in the lead-up to his global cancer summit in Dublin,' said Mr McQuaid.
'The massive, positive public reaction to his comeback to the sport in Australia in January and California in February indicate that, by the time Lance arrives in Ireland next August, the interest levels will be at fever pitch.'
Will he be welcomed by Irish sports fans? Do we have the right to comment about drug use in cycling given the rumours that hounded some of our own top cyclists?

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
What has Lance Armstong got to do with drugs?
The man is an absolute legend: a sporting hero, a fighter and an inspiration to all.
I love cycling and I HATE drug use - don't see where you make the connection between drugs in cycling and Lance Armstrong?

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
Cycling is plagued with drugs. Thats my belief anyway, certainly I'd be suspicious of anyone near the top of the sport. But at the same time, I don't blame the drug abusers as no other sport is nearly as physically and mentally demanding as cycling. The ones that do use them have a massive edge over anyone that dosen't so you are damned if you don't and probably in the long run, damned if you do.

he didn't.
and yes Loyal drugs are ruining cycling, I agree 100%, but there are still riders out there who do not and have not used them and compete in races with their physical ability for the love of cycling. Lance Armstrong certainly was/is one of these riders.

How can you be sure Sami? I don't know all the history of this debate but AFAIK there are blood samples taken from Armstrong from several years ago. Why won't he consent to have those retested using todays more sophisticated test methods? It would be an easy way to add strength to his defence and it would silence a lot of critics.SamiPremier08 wrote:he didn't.

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
RMD Lance Armstrong was tested an insane amount of times during his career. Only once was a questionabble substance found in his system but there wasn't enough for it to have had any chance of effecting his performance.
I have great respect for the man and his achievements.

As would I have a massive respect for the man, regardless of whether he was on anything or not. If he was, then it was still a level playing field in a way. If he wasn't, then that would make his achievements all the more remarkable.

fair point Loyal.
innocent until proven guilty. I'd stand by my opinion that Armstrong never used drugs - take a read of his books.

I have "It's not about the bike" and "every second counts" here but I've never got around to reading them.
Are they any good?

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
Also, sport has evolved a lot in the last twenty years. Every Gaelic Footballer and Hurler in the country today will be taking excessive amounts of protein and cretin and other such substances almost daily. Like in a way, is this not drug abuse? There is fine line between what is and what isn't allowed. I don't know what the rules for each and every sport is but you can be sure that every prefessional sportsman and woman will be taking something to help improve perfromance be it legal or illegal. What exactly consitutes drugs? Like if I eat loads of bananas before an event, surely that will improve my performance but obviously bananas aren't drugs. I find it hard to comprehend anyway.

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
the rules are clearly set out.
there are illegal substances that you cannot take.
if you choose to take a legal substance, fine, fair enough.
if you take an illegal substance, you are breaking the rules and taking what is seen as an unfair and unsporting advantage - CHEATING.
simple enough.

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
What sets a legal substance apart from an illegal one, though? Like if I take an antibiotic for a cold and go out compete in the 100m tomorrow, then the antibiotic will show up in tests because there is some very small amount of something in it. But antibiotics aren't performancing enhancing drugs?

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
From what I read in his books he was a very dedicated man. I dont think he ever took anything. If i remember correctly the suspisous substance in his test was something to do with the cancer markers that can be detected in blood

Re: Lance Armstrong to ride in the Tour of Ireland
The man himself was the most drug tested sportsman on the planet while on his way to winning 7 Le Tours and every test came up clean.
He is an inspritational man who fought Cancer and went on to dominate his chosen sports biggest most grueling race, yet his doubters still point the finger at drug use even though he has never missed a test, or had a test prove positive.
Shame!

Sorry BE but to have the career he had was a superhuman effort. But to do it with all the other medical issues makes it physically impossible in my opinion.
I just don't buy it - sorry.
